The Catholic Daughters #2550 will be hosting a celebration in honor of St. Joseph's Feast Day. We invite you to join us. We also invite you to join us in praying the Novena from March 10th to March 18th. The Feast Day of St. Joseph is celebrated of March 19th. This tradition is normally held with an altar of food. The altars where also decorated with pictures, statues, and icons. As the patron saint of workers, families, and the Universal Church, people gave up their most valuable possession to this altar which was their food. This tradition dates back to the Middle Ages in Sicily when there was a drought. The faithful prayed to St. Joseph for rain through intercession so their crops could grow, and food could be made. The rain then came and people wanted to honor St. Joseph for his intercession and answering of their prayers. This is where the tradition of the fava bean came from. During that time, all the people could eat was fava beans because they were able to grow in dry dirt. This is what kept the Sicilians from starving. During this celebration, you will be able to see a sampling of the food there were most often seen on these altars. Those being fruits, vegetables, and pastries molded into items associated with St. Joseph. There will be a prayer card and fava bean for you to take. There will also be a basket for monetary donations that will be given to the poor who eat at St. Joseph's Diner. We also invite you to bring non-perishable food items to be donated to the diner as well which can be brought to the Life Center during the week and on the days of the celebration. We are thankful to have you as our congregation! Confession
